Anarchist films online!

The good people at Christie Books have recently made available an extraordinary collection of films on anarchism and the Spanish Civil War. You can watch them online here with any browser.

Most are in Spanish, but some are in English and others have subtitles. All are rare and together they offer a dynamic cinematic introduction to the richest moment in the history of anarchism and perhaps even the classical revolutionary tradition. Enjoy!

The following films are now available:

    Choisy le Roi, 1912
    Red Years, Black Years
    Delgado y Granado
    El Grupo Primero de Mayo
    Salvador Puig Antich
    Vivir la Utopia
    Buenaventura Durruti
    20 November, 1936
    The Will of a People
    Porque Perdimos la Guerra
    Queridissimos Verdugos
    Nuestro Culpable
    Nestor Makhno
    Carne de Fieras
    Exiles 1
    Exiles 2

Here is just one example, Barcelona, July 19, 1936.

Globalization of Misery

A Jack Daniel’s billboard at the corner of 37th Avenue and 48th Street in Queens (New York), not far from my apartment. In English, it reads:

Without borders, but with limits.
Drink Responsibly.

We’re all Americans.

In a clumsy attempt to appeal to pro-immigration sentiment among local Latinos, this advertisement ends up conveying a sinister message: “the brotherhood of capital is open to all,” it seems to say, “so long as you imbibe our mind-numbing poison.” Yuck!
